Laminate flooring is one of the toughest and least wearing floor materials around. It is also a hugely popular choice for those who seek the look of hardwood, and those who wish to avoid a higher level of maintenance. But like all materials, proper care of your floor extends its life and keeps it looking new for years. Regular maintenance also prevents minor scratches from becoming (usually more expensive) repair jobs.
The first thing you can do to care for your laminate flooring is to do general daily maintenance. This includes vacuuming, sweeping, and dust mopping. Most major laminate flooring manufacturers also have their own cleaning kits. It is very important that you follow the instructions and maintenance schedule in these kits. Manufacturer warranties require a specific maintenance schedule to be followed.
As much as possible, wet mopping should be avoided, as well as the use of soap and abrasive cleaners. Instead, use cleaning agents that are especially formulated for laminate floors. These are usually the spray-on variety and many of them entail you spraying the solution to a soft cloth or a dry mop when wiping the laminate floors clean. Both manufacturers' brands and generic ones are available in grocery stores.
